Reception 2019 - 2020

Welcome to Reception

September 2019

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back to Holy Name, we trust you have had a relaxing and enjoyable summer and are returning to us, or joining us, ready for the exciting year ahead.
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself, I am Mrs Nolan, Reception teacher and Foundation Stage leader, together with MIss Johnson and Mrs Amer I will be teaching your child during their Reception year. We work closely with the Nursery team to ensure children have access to a wide range of activities to support them throughout their Foundation Stage journey.
I look forward to working closely with you all to ensure your children have the best start to their time in Holy Name.

Upon arriving in Reception children are encouraged to sit and practise writing their name, whatever stage they may be at, mark making, using identifiable letters, to being able to write their name independently, in their signing in book, this peaceful and calm start to the morning, with a familiar routine helps children to settle and be ready to begin a day’s exploring and learning!

We begin our day with our class prayers and children are encouraged to spend peaceful time reflecting, we follow the “Come and See” RE curriculum which teaches about the life and messages of Jesus.

In the Foundation Stage we use the Development Matters guidance, underpinned by 4 themes, Unique Child, Positive Relationships, Enabling Environments, Learning and Development, this guidance allows us ensure we are facilitating opportunities to optimise children’s development and ensure we are matching our provision to children’s needs.

This year our main topics, through which we will support children’s development are:

Autumn 1    Ourselves
Autumn 2    Toys
Spring 1    Weather
Spring 2    Growing
Summer 1    Fairy Tales
Summer 2    Animals and Their Environments

We will use these topics as a basis in which to support your child through their learning journey ensuring opportunity for learning is ever present.

We will be continuing to use Letters and Sounds to support your child’s phonic development, which is key to their learning to read and write. Reception children will receive their reading pack, which will include, sound flash cards, tricky words and a reading books as appropriate. There will also be some information regarding supporting your child with reading.
We will have daily English and Maths lessons followed by an adult led focused activity to give children an opportunity to apply their newly learnt skills. Our continuous provision will offer your children opportunities to explore and develop through a combination of play and focused activities. Lessons for all children will begin at 9:05 am so it is important that your child is in school on time wherever possible.

PE will be on Wednesday for reception children. We are also excited to announce that once again, we will be working with City in the Community to provide specialist sports teaching for Reception age children. We are delighted to announce that we will be working with the same excellent coach as last year – Rory, his sessions will be held on Thursday afternoons.  PE kit consists of navy blue shorts, white t-shirt and black pumps, navy blue jogging bottoms are allowed where necessary. Please ensure your child has suitable footwear for outdoor PE. Kits can be placed on your child’s peg and left in school for a half term.

We will be asking parents/carers to support us in compiling their child’s learning journey by sharing with us any achievements your child may make at home; reading a book, telling a story, noticing a pattern or shapes, counting, being kind, making models are all examples of kinds of things we would love you to share, however it can be anything! Templates are available download here or paper copies are in school, please ask!  Fill in a brief description of what your child did and if you have a picture it can be emailed to myself or Miss Lohan at the addresses below we can then add it to the Learning Journey.

Snack will be provided each day, milk and fruit is available for children who wish to have it. There is a charge for milk for children aged 5+ which can be paid for via ParentPay.

It may be necessary for children to have a change of clothes in school in case of accidents.
We will be happy to discuss any issues with you as needed, we do ask however that if you wish to speak to us after school that you wait until all the other children are handed over to their parents/carers to ensure their safety.

Alternatively, we can be contacted via email. (Please do not email with urgent messages – call the school: 0161 226 6303)

Many thanks for your continued support,

Mrs Nolan, Miss Johnson, Mrs Amer.

Useful Information for Parents

These are our new home observation sheets, they allow parents and carers to share with us any achievements your children make at home. The picture box is for the child to draw a picture of what they did and then the adult observing writes about what happened. You can also include a photo if appropriate which can be emailed to s.mason@holyname.manchester.sch.uk for reception children or c.lohan@holyname.manchester.sch.uk for nursery children.
These achievements can range from counting things, telling a story, helping with baking/cooking, helping out a relative, making things, following instructions, reading…. anything your child is proud of.
These observations will be added to your child’s learning journey to allow us to produce a holistic view of your child’s development.
