Year One 2019 - 2020

Welcome to Year One

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welome back to everyone in Year One! We are excited to continue with our learning and to practise our skills in all curricuum areas.

It is really importaant for children in Year One to be practising their reading everyday and to have the chance of winning the golden ticket each half term for reading at home. Please sign your name everytime you read and records will be signed three times a week.

Children in year 1 will take their Phonics Screening test in mid-June and we are very grateful for the support you have shown in helping your children to achieve the best they possibly can.  It is important for children to practise their sounds at home and to recognise sounds in their sentences. The children will be asked to read a series of real and non-real words to test their ability to decode, using segmenting and blending with sounds they know and are learning. Here are some links to useful sites to help your child practise these skills.

Our Maths and English will continue to follow the year 1 curriculum objectives outlined below. It is really helpful if you practise counting with your child forwards and backwards in 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s.
In our science lessons we will be looking at Plants and Seasonal Changes and we hope to take a local walk to support these themes.

Our topic this term will be Our Local Area and Weather. It will be really helful if you talk to your child about where they live and how they travel to school. It will also help to discuss with them the directions which they move in.

We are looking forward to continuing an excellent working partnership with parents and encourage you to discuss any concerns you have regarding any issues that may be affecting your child, with us. Parents are welcome to come and speak to us after school however, in order to ensure the safety of all children we ask that if you do wish to discuss something with us you wait a few moments after home time to allow time for other children to be safely dismissed to their parents and carers.

As we look forward to the new term we remember our Mission Statement and we place ‘the Gospel and the love of Christ at the heart of all we do.’

· School finishes at 3.00pm if somebody other than yourself is picking up your child please inform school as soon as possible.

· Please ensure that school has your up to date mobile number and that it is on and fully charged during the school so that you can be contacted easily should your child become ill.

· Would you also please email the school office on admin@holyname.manchester.sch.uk giving your name and your child’s name, so we can have another means of communication with you if you haven’t already done so.

· Reading packs must be in school each day; this will be extremely beneficial in supporting children’s reading development. Most of the children now have a school book bag available to purchase from Parent Pay.

Your child will be given homework in English and Maths every Friday. Please return your child's homework books every Tuesday.

Everyday your child will be given a piece of fruit as a snack. If your child would lie to have milk you need to pay through parent pay each half term or for the full term.
